developments in the attacks on u.s. facilities in both cairo, egypt. and benghazi, libya. u.s. sources now tell cnn the attack in benghazi was actually planned in advance and the perpetrators used a protest outside the u.s. consulate in benghazi there simply as a diversion. four americans died including the united states ambassador to libya chris stevens. our foreign affairs correspondent, jill dougherty, has been working her sources to get a better idea on exactly what happened. our senior international correspondent nic robertson is monitoring the search for who's responsible. and our pentagon correspondent chris lawrence is keeping tabs on the u.s. military's response to what's going on as well. let's go to jill first. she's watching what's going on. jill, what's the latest over at the state department beyond the heartbreak of a top u.s. diplomat, three others killed? >> right, wolf. just in a few minutes we're expecting an update, a briefing on background by senior officials here at the state department. but for now this is what we know based on the conversations and what we are hearing fro

are in custody in benghazi. they're being indirectly linked to the rocket attack on the u.s. consulate. i want to talk to jimana in tripoli, the libyan capital west of benghazi. first of all, what do we know about those arrested? >> very little, suzanne, so far. what we understand from libyan officials is that at least one of those arrested is a -- they were detained in benghazi yesterday. we know they are being interrogated to see what role they had in the attack, but according to one sore libyan official today, they may not have been directly linked to the attack. they may have ties to the extremist organization that carried out the attack. they have not been charged yet. they are detained and being intrargted acorked to libyan officials, so we should be knowing about this as information is released by the libyan government. >> do we believe these people are really responsible for what took place, or does this look like this is more kind of a show? >> well, quite frankly, suzanne, the libyan government here is under a lot of pressure when it comes to this. not only from the united states, bu

.s. marines are speeding to benghazi where they will help secure the u.s. consulate where the attack occurred. jill dougherty joins us now. >> reporter: officials here at the state department are beginning to piece together the details, but this is what we know. we have been speaking to them all morning long. what they say is essentially you had three things going on. you had the basic demonstration by regular libyans, but then you had a very targeted attack on the attack in benghazi by these heavy heavily-armed militants. we understand there were a couple dozen of them. they were using rpgs. very serious attack. as they attack the consulate, it starts a fire. and that is where the story with the ambassador comes in. the ambassador, mr. stevens, had been in benghazi temporarily. he's normally in the capital tripoli. also shawn smith, 10-year veteran, was also there on a temporary assignment. they were inside that consulate. fire breaks out. there are now three people along with one security person into a safe room. that safe room becomes filled with smoke and so at least ambassador stevens, p

the militants may have come from who were responsible for the attacks in benghazi. this basically gives the president options, if you will. we talked about it a minute ago. drones are flying over eastern libya, collecting intelligence, survey surveying on the ground. if they feel they have a credible target they can go after, they can take that to the attacks in benghazi. this will give the president an option he could u use. he could use missiles on armed drones. they could get an indication that the libyans are going after the targets. this puts the polices into place. u.s. navy warships tomahawk missiles send a particular message, even if those warships don't fire and stay on patrol. >> just to recap here, in sanaa it is the yemeni police who are taking action and trying to stop the protest in a peaceful manner? >> right. the yemenis have an interior ministry of security forces that is quite extensive. over the years one has to say that in the past there's been a lot of question about the loyalty of those security forces under the previous president. whether they

happened yesterday in the city of benghazi. a libyan security official told nbc news that the u.s. ambassador, chris stevens, was killed when a mob, an armed mob attacked the consulate in benghazi yesterday. first they attacked the consulate with rpgs and then automatic rifles and then set the building on fire. this official says that the u.s. ambassador was holed up in some sort of room and apparently died of smoke inhalation. the u.s. state department has not officially confirmed his death, only saying that a u.s. official has been killed. >> and richard, do we know anything about the identity of the three others that were killed in that attack as well? are they americans, military personnel? >> reporter: we don't know. we know -- we've been told that the u.s. ambassador's body and three other bodies have been taken to the benghazi airport. there are some reports that at least one, perhaps all of them, may have been u.s. marines, but we have not been able to confirm that. our source is only saying that it was the ambassador. three other bodies and that the libyan president and

at that consultate in benghazi. we have been speaking to the fbi and their investigation is already underway. a team of fbi agents should have landed in libya as early as today. they, backed up by a marine rapid response team already on the ground inside libya. there is one u.s. navy destroyer and one more coming off the coast of libya. and overhead, surveillance drones tracking events and the eastern side of the country. in fact, yesterday, the report is that islamist militants fired at those surveillance drones and actually shut down the airport on the eastern side of the country for a couple of hours. it just shows again how complex the terror manhunt will be and how dangerous it can be. security is not good. the terrain is very difficult. the government says it wants to help. there are new reports just in the past couple hours of a further roundup of suspects who might have been at the scene of the consultate but often the government in libya is at the mercy of the militants that could be responsible for the tragic event. harris? >> boy, have we seen that play out. who truer words spoken. greg p

gadhafi and killed in a city, benghazi, that he helped to save. i understand that there are 200 marines being sent to libya. what do we know about the tk orders? >> 200 marines who are already in the region, they are aboard one of those flat-top helicopter carriers in the iranian sea. they are called amphibious ready groups, and they are called f.a.s.t. teams prepositioned in all parts of the world, but particularly the hot middle east region as we see here. it should not take long to get those 200 marines who will be particularly equipped for the mission there in tripoli. this is not some kind of military operation or a strike of any kind. they will be armed with small arms and anti-riot gear and the like as opposed to going in for a military strike or operation. now in addition to that preparations are under way, too, to send additional f.a.s.t. teams, maybe not in the same numbers, but one to cairo and one to kabul. we know from past experience there has been violent and deadly sectarian flare ups against americans in kabul over some of the actions of american troops there that were
